Flying With A Vape Pen To American Samoa: What You Need To Know Before You Go!

Contents
Can you bring your vape pen to American Samoa? Here are the flight rules, what we know about local rules, and how to fly safely with a vape pen.

Can You Fly With a Vape Pen To American Samoa?
Vaping in the Air
Yes, you can fly with a vape pen, as long as it travels in your carry-on bag or on your person.
What you can't do is use it. Vaping is banned on commercial flights, and the FAA calls it dangerous and a federal offense on US flights.
You also can't charge your vape on board. Some airports have smoking areas where vaping is allowed, but rules vary, so ask staff or follow the signs.
What You Can Bring Along
The TSA allows vapes in carry-on bags, with lithium ion batteries of 100 Wh or less. Spare batteries must also go in your carry-on, with the terminals covered.
Nicotine e-liquid is allowed in the cabin. Bottles must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less and go in your quart-sized liquids bag.
Never pack cannabis or THC products.
Allowed In Checked Luggage?
No. Vapes and spare lithium batteries are banned from checked luggage on US flights, because they are a fire risk in the cargo hold.
Airlines outside the US apply similar rules, but check with each airline on your route. If your carry-on is checked at the gate, take your vape and spare batteries out and keep them with you.
Are Vape Pens Illegal in American Samoa?
The Legal Status of Vape Pens in American Samoa
We could not find a territorial law that bans e-cigarettes in American Samoa.
In July 2024, Samoa News reported that the territory had no law banning the import and sale of vapes. A bill to ban flavored vapes was considered but did not pass.
The same report said the Department of Health had removed vapes and e-cigarettes from store shelves. Don't count on buying vape supplies locally, and check with the American Samoa Department of Health before you travel.
Rules Surrounding E-Cigarette Use in Public Areas
We could not confirm where vaping is allowed in public. Assume it is not allowed wherever smoking is banned, and ask before you vape in hotels, restaurants, workplaces or near schools.
Age Restrictions
American Samoa is a US territory. Federal law makes it illegal for retailers to sell tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, to anyone under 21.
Tips for Bringing a Vape Pen on a Plane
With a bit of preparation, flying with a vape pen is simple. Here are some tips:
- Research TSA Regulations:
Check the TSA rules before you fly. Airlines can add their own limits, such as how many devices you can carry, so check those too.
Also check the rules for any country where you change planes.
- Keep Your Device Securely Stored: Keep your vape in a case, switched off or locked, so the button can't be pressed in your bag. Store spare batteries in a battery case.
- Know That You Can't Vape Onboard: There are no vaping areas on commercial flights. Wait until you are off the plane and in a place where vaping is allowed.
