Airport Regulations For Taking a Vape Pen To Brazil

The UK government's Brazil travel advice says all electronic cigarettes and vaping devices are illegal in Brazil, including refills, parts and accessories. Customs officials can confiscate any vape products found in travelers' luggage.

The safest choice is to leave your vape at home. If you're connecting through Brazil to another country, the same risk applies when your bags pass through Brazilian customs.

Penalties For Bringing A Vape Pen Into Brazil

Confiscation is the main risk the UK government describes. We could not find official fines for travelers, so we don't list any.

Drug penalties are severe. Bringing drugs into or out of Brazil in any quantity is illegal and can mean a long prison sentence. Never fly with cannabis or THC vape cartridges. Drug laws abroad can be far stricter than at home.

Are Vape Pens Illegal in Brazil?

Legislation

Brazil's health regulator, ANVISA, updated its ban in 2024. According to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids legal database, Resolution No. 855 bans the manufacture, import, sale, distribution, storage, transport and advertising of all electronic smoking devices, including accessories and refills.

The resolution also bans using any electronic smoking device in enclosed public places.

Culture

Don't buy a vape in Brazil. Selling them is illegal, so any vape on offer there is unregulated.

Public Health Concerns

Brazil's health regulator treats all e-cigarettes as banned products. If you need nicotine during your trip, ask a pharmacist about nicotine replacement products such as patches or gum.

Tips for Bringing a Vape Pen on a Plane

Here are the key rules for flying with a vape.

Keep It In Your Carry-On

The TSA allows vapes in carry-on bags only, never in checked luggage. Each lithium-ion battery must be 100 watt-hours or less, and you must protect the device from turning on by accident.

Pack Batteries And Liquids Safely

Keep spare batteries in a case so the terminals can't touch metal or each other. Carry e-liquid in bottles of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less, inside your liquids bag.

Don't Vape Or Charge On Board

The FAA says vapes must never be used or charged on the aircraft. Airlines may also limit how many devices you carry, so check your airline's rules.

Check Your Connections

Check the rules of any country where you change planes, too. A country that bans vapes may still seize one during a layover.
