What is a Vape Pen?

A vape pen is a small electronic device that heats a liquid, usually containing nicotine, into an aerosol that is inhaled. Most have a battery, a heating coil and a tank or pod.

Vaping is not risk-free. The FDA says e-cigarettes deliver harmful chemicals and highly addictive nicotine, and people who don't smoke should not start.

Can You Fly With A Vape Pen?

On most flights, yes. Vapes are allowed in your carry-on bag or on your person, but never in checked luggage.

The TSA allows vapes in carry-on bags only, never in checked bags. Each lithium ion battery must be 100 Wh or less, and you must protect the device from switching on by accident.

Spare batteries also go in your carry-on, with the terminals covered. Nicotine e-liquid bottles must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less and fit in your quart-sized liquids bag.

You can't vape on a commercial flight, and you can't charge your vape on board. The FAA says vapes are a fire risk and must never be used or charged in the aircraft.

Flying To Thailand With A Vape Pen

Don't do it. The UK Foreign Office warns that it is illegal to possess or use any vape, e-cigarette, pod, e-liquid or heat-not-burn device in Thailand.

Offenses can lead to confiscation, heavy fines (typically 5,000 to 30,000 baht), detention and court proceedings. You may have to stay in Thailand until the case is finished, and there are no exceptions for tourists or personal use.

The ban covers nicotine-free e-liquid too. There is no registration or permit that lets visitors bring a vape.

Are Vape Pens Illegal in Thailand?

Overview of Vape Pen Laws in Thailand

Yes. According to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids' legal database, Thailand bans the import, manufacture and sale of e-cigarettes and e-liquids.

The import ban comes from a Ministry of Commerce notification. A 2024 decree from the Committee on Safety of Products and Services bans manufacturing for sale, sale and services of e-cigarettes and e-liquids.

Legality of Standard Vape Pens

Standard vape pens are not legal in Thailand. The bans apply to all e-cigarettes and e-liquids, with or without nicotine.

Legality of Mods & Sub-Ohm Devices

Mods and sub-ohm devices are e-cigarettes too, so the same bans apply. There is no separate rule that makes some devices legal.

Tips for Bringing a Vape Pen on a Plane

If your trip ends in Thailand, the best tip is simple: leave your vape, pods and e-liquid at home.

If you vape on other legs of your trip, these rules apply on every flight:

• Carry-on only: Keep your vape and spare batteries in your carry-on or on your person. If your bag is checked at the gate, take them out first.
• Prevent accidental activation: Switch the device off or lock it, and use a case. Cover spare battery terminals or use a battery case.
• No vaping or charging on board: Wait until you are off the plane and in a place where vaping is allowed.
• Check connections: If you change planes in another country, check its rules too.
